FILM: M for Mississippi: A Road Trip Through the Birthplace of the Blues

Everyone knows the blues came from Mississippi. Here's an update: They never left. This documentary, a winner at multiple indie film festivals, takes audiences on a wild ride through the heart of the Mississippi Delta's current blues scene - from sun-drenched cotton fields to whiskey-soaked juke joints. More than just a collection of concert performances, the film collects the sounds, images and feel of both the performers and their native landscape - an environment essential to their livelihoods and inseparable from their art. Runtime: 94 minutes. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening.

FILM: No One Knows About Persian Cats

On a quest to network with other musicians, indie rockers Negar and Ashkan meet up with numerous folkies, metalheads, and rappers who populate their local music scene. Yet as the New York Times points out, “These earnest, impetuous young artists, scrambling to find space and time for rehearsal, live not in Austin or Brooklyn, but in Tehran. And of course circumstances for iconoclastic, bohemian young people in Iran are not what they are elsewhere. Unlike their western counterparts, Negar, Ashkan and their friends are bravely laying claim to creativity, idealism and free expression in defiance of an authoritarian state that seeks to deny them those universal birthrights of modern youth.” Persian with English subtitles.

Runtime: 101 minutes.

FILM: Crimson, White & Indigo: Grateful Dead, 1989

This July 7, 1989 concert at Philadelphia’s JFK Stadium offers a snapshot of the Dead’s 1989 tour, where the band played to some of its biggest audiences ever. Two years removed from the craziness that surrounded the “comeback” tour of 1987 and the Dead’s unprecedented flirtation with mainstream success – thanks to “Touch of Grey” and the In the Dark album – the group was still riding the crest of that wave and attracting thousands of new fans with each passing tour. Visually, the Dead’s stage set that summer was perhaps the most spectacular they ever mounted – designed by noted Czech artist Jan Sawka, it consisted of dozens of enormous painted canvas panels covered with various patterns, colors and shapes—some abstract, some concrete; quite an amazing sight in the enormous JFK stadium, for what would turn out to be that venue’s final rock concert.

Runtime: 170 minutes.

Thursday, August 26 | 6:30 PM tasting, 7:30 PM film

By The Glass: Merlove

“You may recall that Miles, the pinot-noir-obsessed oenophile played by Paul Giamatti in Sideways, was an unrepentant merlot hater. As its title suggests, Merlove is Napa Valley-based filmmaker Rudy McClain's fun-loving defense of wines made from the dark-blue grapes of Bordeaux, California, Italy and elsewhere. This valentine to merlot is ultimately an impassioned plea for variety as the spice of life, for sampling a broad spectrum of wines to refine one's palette, or simply to appreciate the seemingly infinite selection of quality wines at reasonable prices.” – The Seattle Times.

Runtime: 100 minutes.

Preceded by a Merlot tasting presented by Michael Hughes, GM/Wine Club Director at Joe’s Wines & Liquor.
