Each year more than 15,000 students visit the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art to experience the wonders of art. Educational programs are offered throughout the year to inspire students at all levels. Teacher resources and workshops provide creative ways to stimulate learning and integrate art into subjects across the curriculum.
Guided Tours
September through May, tours are provided for groups of 10 to 60 students in grades 1 through 12, Wednesdays through Fridays, between 10 am and 2 pm. Groups must be accompanied by at least one adult chaperone for every 10 students. Tours for grades 1-8 include a hands-on studio art activity (for most tours) that complements the material introduced in the museum tour. All scheduled school groups receive free admission (unless otherwise noted). Tours run 45 minutes and tours with a hands-on activity run approximately two hours.
During the summer months (June and July only), docent led tours may be scheduled Wednesday and Thursday between 10 am and 2 pm. The same parameters apply to group size and grades as indicated above; however art activities are not included during the summer months. Guided tours are scheduled based on availability of volunteer docents.
Tours are led by docents, or volunteer educators, who engage students in active looking and discussions by focusing on art works from the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Additionally, students who come to the Brooks with their class will receive a "Come Back Card." The cards are good for free family admission for up to five people so students can come back to the museum and have a meaningful experience with their families.
Self-Guided Tours
Self-guided tours are led by classroom teachers, home school parents, or community leaders. You may schedule a self-guided tour if you do not wish to have a docent-led tour, if guided tours are not available on the day you plan to visit, or if your students will be carrying out an assignment in the galleries.
Self-guided tours must be scheduled in advance to ensure availability of gallery space. Please note that the Brooks’ docent-led tours have priority access to museum spaces and objects. We strongly recommend scheduling self-guided group tours in the afternoon to allow for maximum freedom in the galleries. Teachers are encouraged to visit the Brooks before their scheduled self-guided visits in order to make plans, and admission is free if you show your teaching badge/identification.
